The Kansas City Royals have been on a complete tear as of late, rising to the top of the AL Central, winning their last 10 games, and winning the final 3 games against the Tigers to take the divison lead. The Royals are completely underrated but at the same time the AL Central has been a complete mess this season. Here were the Division Standings at the end of May.

Team Record GB L10
Detroit Tigers 31-21 -- 4-6
Chicago White Sox 28-29 5.5 5-5
Kansas City Royals 26-29 6.5 4-6
Minnesota Twins 25-28 6.5 3-7
Cleveland Indians 26-30

7.0

5-5

The key player in all of this is Alex Gordon. He is leading the team with 4 Home Runs this month, and is one of the best players at getting walks, since he is also leading the team with 9 walks. He also has two stolen bases. Alcides Escobar has been hitting .404 this month, plus he has hit 7 doubles, leading the team in that department. Also, the Royals have just been balanced as far as who has been hitting RBI's to bring home the runs. They have 6 players with 10 or more RBI's this month.

When it comes to pitching, their starters and relievers have been great. Greg Holland has 6 saves so far this month, striking out 11, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk, all of this in just pitching 7 innings. The youngster Danny Duffy has been a hot starting pitcher as well, getting 2 wins in his 3 starts, striking out 18 and allowing only 5 walks. With a batting average against of .164 and a 0.86 WHIP so far in June. Duffy is not normally this impressive, but if he can keep this up it would be a large upgrade in their rotation.

The other thing that has happened is that Detroit has not been great this month. Justin Verlander is 0-3 this month with a 9.16 ERA. With a batting average against of .359 and a WHIP of 2.04, it looks like the Tigers ace might be having a rough month, and it would just be interesting to see if he is hurt or not or if he is just having a tired arm for all of the innings he's thrown in the last few years. He has allowed 10 walks and struck out only 12 in 18.2 innings of work. So, now it is important to double check and see what the current standings are in the AL Central.

Team Record GB L10
Kansas City Royals 39-32 -- 10-0
Detroit Tigers 36-32 1.5 3-7
Cleveland Indians 36-36 3.5 5-5
Chicago White Sox 35-37 4.5 4-6
Minnesota Twins 32-38 6.5 3-7

So, not only are the Royals 13-3 so far this month, the Tigers are 5-11, the White Sox are middle of the road at 7-8, Indians are an impressive 10-6, and the Twins are 7-10. Will the division race come down to a chase between the Royals and the Indians? There are many questions still to answer in the crazy AL Central battle that is happening. If there is something to be certain of, it is that the division is not over with at this time.
