In this week's Major League Baseball Power Rankings we have a change at the top after last week's number one, San Francisco Giants, had a terrible week to fall back to the pack. The Seattle Mariners and Miami Marlins have fallen out of the top 10 while the St Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals have entered the top 10.
At the top: The Oakland A's are this week's top team following the 1-6 week for the San Francisco Giants. The A's managed just a 3-3 record over the prior week but were able to stay ahead of the competition. The A's are just a half game behind the Giants for the best record in baseball and hold a 4 1/2 game lead over second-place Los Angeles Angels in the AL West. They currently lead the American League in scoring and LHP Scott Kazmir ranks second in the American League with a 2.05 ERA.
Biggest rise: The St. Louis Cardinals went 4-1 over the last week to rise five spots and into sixth place in the rankings. The Cardinals split a two-game series in Tampa Bay followed by a three-game road sweep of the Washington Nationals.
Worst week: The San Francisco Giants went 1-6 at home during the last week to fall from their lofty perch in the number one spot in the rankings. The Giants' bullpen squandered late inning leads three consecutive days to the Colorado Rockies as they were swept by their NL West rival. The Giants also dropped three out of four to the Washington Nationals. How good have the Giants been this year? They had the worst week of their season so far and they still own the best record in baseball by a half game over the Oakland A's and hold a 6 1/2 game lead over second-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
At the bottom: The Tampa Bay Rays remain in the 30th spot for the second week in a row. They went 3-3 over the last week but it wasn't enough to crawl out of the hole they have dug for themselves. Tampa Bay ranks 13th in the American League in batting average, 15th in slugging, and 10th in on-base-percentage,
