Matt Adams has put up some very good numbers in the last two days for the St. Louis Cardinals, hitting consecutive homers in the first two games of the series against the Washington Nationals.

Adams wanted to continue his offensive onslaught this Sunday on Father’s Day as his father was in attendance for the series finale at Busch Stadium. The power-hitting infielder did exactly and he went yard for the third straight day as St. Louis completed a three-game sweep over Washington with a 5-2 win.

Adams didn’t have productive day at the plate going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts but his only bit was a big one. Adams connected a two-run HR in the bottom of the second inning to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Matt Holiday continued the slugging party with a solo shot of his own to put the Cardinals up 3-0 after three innings.

The Nationals pulled one back in the fifth when Jayson Werth walked with the bases loaded to score Danny Espinosa. St. Louis, however, restored the three-run lead quickly when Kolten Wong scored on a sac fly from Holliday who drove in two runs today.

The Cardinals added another run in the bottom of the seventh when Holliday scored on an RBI double from Allen Craig. Washington scored another run in the ninth when a walk from Adam LaRoche scored Sandy Leon. However, that would be all for Washington as Trevor Rosenthal recorded the final out to get the win.

Today’s victory completed a sweep and the Cardinals continue their surge. They are still a few games behind the Milwaukee Brewers but they are slowly shortening the gap for the lead in the NL Central.
