After the original series opener was started on Friday and literally got washed away due to rain, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Mets 3-2 in the actual series opener Saturday afternoon.

The D-backs knew exactly what they were going to see from Zack Wheeler and made him work extremely hard in the early going. D-back hitters repeatedly fouled off his 95 mph plus fastball and laid off his slider out of the strike zone, which quickly paid off. Arizona scored two in the second inning from Martin Prado and Cody Ross RBI singles. Prado hit another RBI single in the third to tally the Diamondbacks' third and final run in the game.

Zack Wheeler settled down after the third inning and pitched into the seventh inning before being removed from the ballgame. Wheeler pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs --two earned-- on six hits and seven strikeouts, in a losing effort.

Josh Collmenter had a eerily similar outing, pitching six innings while allowing two earned runs on six hits and four strikeouts. Curtis Granderson hit a RBI double in the third inning and David Wright hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to account for both New York runs.

The D-backs bullpen got the job done, despite Evan Marshall and Brad Ziegler escaping jams in the seventh and eighth innings. Addison Reed recorded his 13th save in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Both teams will play a single admission double header to make up the rained out game Friday. Game one is the regularly scheduled game with a pitching matchup of Bronson Arroyo and Rafael Montero. For game two, the Diamondbacks have brought up Zeke Spruill from the Triple-A Reno Aces to make the spot start. As for the Mets, Daisuke Matsuzaka will make his first start of the year after being a long relief pitcher out of the bullpen.
