The New York Yankees got off to an early lead, the Brewers came back and had a save opportunity to defeat the Bronx Bombers at the Yankee Stadium. However, Francisco Rodriguez blew his first save but that was no issue as the team won 6-5 with a walk off hit in the bottom of the ninth.

This win helped the Brewers to maintain a sizable lead at the top of the NL Central.

The Yankees jumped all over starter Matt Garza scoring three runs in the first. A double from Brett Gardner and consecutive walks from Jacoby Ellsbury and Mark Teixeira loaded the bases with one out and Kelly Johnson took advantage of the opportunity. The infielder hit a two-run double to put New York ahead and an RBI single from Yangervis Solarte scored Teixeira to put the Yankees up by three.

The Brewers answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Garza doubled, advanced to third on a sac bunt and later scored on an RBI single from Rickie Weeks. In the next at-bat, Lyle Overbay singled to add another run after Carlos Gomez reached home.

Three more runs in the sixth put the Brewers ahead. Jean Segura tied the game when he scored on a single from Jonathan Lucroy, Martin Maldonado gave Milwaukee the lead after an RBI double from Logan Schafer and a fielder’s choice from Weeks scored Lucroy to put the Brewers up 5-3.

The Yankees pulled one back in the seventh when Teixeira scored on another RBI single from Solarte but they came to the ninth trailing. Francisco Rodriguez stepped up to the plate looking for another save but he couldn’t convert it: Teixeira connected his seventh HR of the year to tie the game 5-5.

It seemed like we were headed to extra innings but the Brewers had the final saying at Miller Park. With two out and a man on second, Mark Reynolds launched an RBI single to right that turned out to be the winning hit of the game. Rickie Weeks crossed home plate and Milwaukee left the Yankees on the field after a spectacular walk-off win in front of their fans.

It was a tough win but the Brewers managed to come through in the clutch. Even though their pitching wasn’t up to the task, the offense carried the team this time. A trend that has been repeated ever since the 2014 season started.
