Who needs a hit when all you have to do is walk.  That must have been what the San Diego Padres were thinking to themselves in the eighth inning of their game against the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.

Without the benefit of a hit, the Padres (6-7) were able to rally from behind to win 5-4 over the Rockies (6-8) at Petco Park.

"You have to hang around long enough and stay close and things like this will happen," Padres manager Bud Black said.

The eighth inning began with the Rockies leading 4-2 and playing sparkling defense. Right handed reliever Rex Brothers came into the inning hoping to put behind him, and the team, the 10th inning walk-off homer by Brandon Crawford of the Giants on Sunday.

Brothers began the inning wild and walked the first two batters, Xavier Nady and Seth Smith. He was able to then get two quick outs before issuing another walk to Yonder Alfonso to load the bases. With Yasmani Grandal at the plate, Brothers threw a wild pitch past catcher Wilin Rosario.  Rosario recovered the ball and flipped it past Brothers toward second base. Nady, along with Smith, scored and the Padres took a 5-4 lead.

"I don't have an excuse," Brothers said. "As hard as it is, I'll put it behind me and get my butt back out there and get the job done for these other guys."

The Padres bullpen was terrific after taking over to begin the sixth inning. Four Padres relievers combined to no-hit the Rockies through four innings. Their one shaky inning was in the sixth when Alex Torres walked the bases loaded. Padres manager Bud Black came out to replace Torres with Nick Vincent. Troy Tulowitzki then smoked a first pitch fastball on the ground to third baseman Chase Headley who was able to handle it and began a double play to end the inning.

The Rockies began the scoring in the third against Padres starter Eric Stults (0-2, 5.52) and the help of two throwing errors by the Padres. Charlie Blackmon led off the inning with a infield single to second off of Stults. After Cuddyer flied out to center, Carlos Gonzalez lined out to shortstop Everth Cabrera who then threw the ball away attempting to catch Blackmon off the bag at first. Blackmon advanced to second on the error. Tulowitzki hit a groundball back to Stults who threw the ball wide of first base, allowing Blackmon to score and Tulowitzki to take second.

In the fourth inning, Stults gave up singles to Justin Morneau and Nolan Arenado. DJ Lemahieu then singled to left scoring Morneau from second.

Tulowitzki led off the fifth inning with a single to left off of Stults.  Rosario hit his second home run of the year to left field to make it a 4-0 Rockies lead.

Stults pitched five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Padres began their comeback in the fifth inning against Rockies starter Jordan Lyles (2-0, 4.32). With two outs and Alfonso on first after a lead off single, Tommy Media doubled (1) to left scoring Alfonso. Cabrera followed with a double (6) of his own to left. Alex Samaritan then tripled (1) to right-center field, scoring Cabrera and pulling the Padres within one run at 4-3.

On the Media triple, right fielder Michael Cuddyer slammed hard into the wall while running backwards trying to catch the ball. Cuddyer left the game with a right elbow contusion and is listed as day to day. Brandon Barnes replaced Cuddyer in the game.

"I never thought it was tendons or ligaments or anything like that," Cuddyer said. "It's just a bruise, but it definitely got swollen and stiff. I probably could have finished the innings, but about 10 minutes later I could hardly move my (elbow), so I wouldn't have been able to swing or throw."

Lyles went five innings, giving up three runs on six hits, striking out three and walking two.

"Jordan did a nice job keep the ball down in the zone," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "But I saw him laboring a little bit in the fifth. He gave us every chance in the world to win, but his spot came open in the sixth and I decided to take him out."

Dale Thayer (2-0, 1.50) retired the Rockies in order in the eighth inning for the win and Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.

“We kind of stole one,” Alonso said. “ … We battled back. We were down 4-0, made two errors, and we found a way to bounce back, score some runs and chip away and force them into a pressure situation. "
