Texas Rangers’ ace Yu Darvish is one fine pitcher and he managed to break an MLB record in his first inning of the 2014 season.

Darvish started the game against the Tampa Bay Rays in his first game of the year – after missing his Opening Day assignment with stiffness on his neck – and became the fastest player to reach 500 Ks in MLB history.

The Japanese phenom reached the milestone by striking out reigning AL Rookie Of The Year Will Myers in the first inning. That feat gives Darvish 500 strikeouts in just 401 2/3 innings. The previous record holder was Kerry Wood who accomplished the same record in 404 2/3 IP.

Darvish has established himself as one of the best starting pitchers in all of baseball. He possesses a 11.20 K/9 in his career – a good number for a reliever but at the same time it’s a crazy number for a starter.

It’s safe to say that Darvish is set to accomplish big things at the MLB level. He already managed to enter the record books and there’s nothing that suggests he won’t continue making history.
