Stefano Cusin
Stefano Cusin:
"When you do a job like this, you have to manage people's moods and expectations. When you win you have to keep things quiet, and when things aren't going well, you have to find out why and work on it. I don't get carried away too easily. The national team failed to qualify for the last African Cup of Nations and there wasn't that much enthusiasm in the air when I took over. The fans were a bit disappointed with the way the team had been playing. That was the situation when I came in and I started work straight away. I felt very comfortable with the president of FFC, who is a wonderful person, then I got in touch with the players and, slowly but surely, we started to draw up a plan."
Comoros dreams of the World Cup
Comoros began their qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup 26 with two wins out of two, defeating the Central African Republic 4-2 in their opening game, before recording a historic 1-0 victory over the mighty Ghana in November 2023.
Although it's too early to say that the Celacantos have secured their place in the next global final, Stefano Cusin's team is breaking new ground, much to the delight of the island nation and its fans. The Comoros have never won a World Cup qualifier in a group stage before, let alone two, while Cusin and the Fédération de Football des Comore (FFC) are working hard together to grow and develop the game at national level.
