Last year’s big winner from live Gloden Globes awards show was “American Hustle” from David O. Russell and it earned three awards. Jennifer Lawrence won Best Supporting Comedic Film Actress and Amy Adams won Best Leading Comedic Film Actress. Coincidentally, Adams is nominated this year as well for her portrayal in the movie “Big Eyes”.

Although “Boyhood” and “Birdman” enter tonight as overwhelming favorites, the Golden Globes tend to be the awards show that provides us with shocks more than any other. So, heading into this evening look for those two to earn praise but don’t be surprised if we see a shock winner. In particular, look for victories from “Selma”, “Lost”, “The Theory of Everything”, “Grand Budapest Hotel”, and “The Imitation Game”.

Another director who will come into the evening with a lot of hope is Richard Linklater. His film “Boyhood” received fantastic reviews, and has long been regarded as an Oscar hopeful. The Texan has tasted success before for the trilogy “Before Dawn”, “Before Sunset”, and “Before Nightfall”. However, this story of a young boy’s 12 year journey from elementary school to college has earned him a nomination tonight in the Best Director category and many have him tipped as their winner.

However, he has also lost out to director Martin Scorsese and his film “The Departed”.

He won a Golden Globe on an earlier occasion for his 2006 film “Babel”.

Another notable nominee who is in search of a Golden Globe in Mexican director Alejandro González Iñarritu who has been nominated for his film “Birdman”. It has been critically acclaimed, and is a film with Oscar hopes. The film has been nominated this evening in several categories, including the Best Director category.

Meanwhile, Moore has won on only one occasion in spite of having been nominated seven times. Back in 2011, she won Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries for her work in “Game Change”.

On that occasion, he left empty-handed. Will it be that way tonight? Should things shake out the way that the book-makers predict then he won’t.

For the Pennsylvanian, this is his second nomination. He was originally nominated back in 2003 for his work in the television miniseries “Live From Baghdad”.

Tonight, with the focus on the film section, two actors who could truly shine are Julianne Moore and Michael Keaton.

The nomination tonight of “Jane The Virgin” is a landmark moment for The CW, as it is the first time any of their programs have been nominated.

Additionally, the Drama category is wide open this year. It is the first time in quite awhile that “Breaking Bad” will not be competing, and as such it is truly a wide open field.

This is the second year that series which are inlineed can fully compete. Shows which are broadcast across platforms like Amazon Instant Video and Netflix and have been nominated include “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black”.

Individual actors nominated in the Television category this evening include Viola Davis, Gina Rodriguez, Clive Owen, Ruth Wilson, James Spader, and Jeffrey Tambor.

Some notable nominations today are “The Affair” in the Drama category and “Jane the Virgin” in Comedy. Both are in their first year on television.

Tonight’s winners are a result of a vote from 85 members in the HFPA, which is a miniscule number in comparison to the 6,000 members of the American Film Academy who vote for the Oscars.

This year, Julianne Moore leads the way in terms of individual nominations. Moore has been nominated twice, in the categories of Comedic Actress and Dramatic Actress for her work in “Map to the Stars” and “Still Alice”. Moore has won two Golden Globes in the past, for her work in the miniseries “Game Change” and “Crossed Lives”.

Over in the television section, the FXX classic Fargo leads the way with five nominations. Following them is True Detective with four and then Orange is the New Black with three. In terms of notable absentees, we see the Modern Family, a winner on several occasions last year, have no nominations.

In this year’s film categories, the two movies with the most nominations are Birdman and Boyhood. Birdman has seven and Boyhood has five.

One of the main storylines heading into tonight is the continuation of Meryl Streep’s domination at the Golden Globes. She has won eight awards and has been nominated on 29 occasions, a record.

Over the course of the last few weeks, NBC has released several promotional videos featuring the two hosts. [link]
